Elder Candidacy

Candidate: David Lipari

Candidacy Process: A formalized time of testing, giving opportunity to the local church congregation to affirm character and calling in the life of a man desiring to be an elder(overseer/ pastor).

At the point when the candidate is brought before the church body for candidacy, he has already been involved in a long process of testing, where the elders and other church leaders have been given opportunity to observe his personal and public life. As Alexander Strauch writes, “God provides objective, observable qualifications to test the subjective desire of all who seek the office of overseer. Desire alone is not enough; it must be matched by good character and spiritual capability.”

The areas that are observed and confirmed are:

  • Calling (Acts 13:1-3; 1 Peter 5:2)
  • Character (1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9; 1 Peter 5:1-3)
  • Competency (Titus 1:9; 2 Timothy 2:2)
  • Compatibility (Galatians 2:7-9)

Timeline: April 23rd, 2017 – June 4th, 2017

On April 23rd, David was brought before the church to officially begin a period of testing, where the church was invited to pray, discern and communicate.

  • Prayer: Asking God to direct, affirm, and encourage.
  • Discern: As best as possible, discern whether or not the candidate is qualified based on the above categories/scripture
  • Communicate: All forms of encouragement, affirmation, concern, or questions are requested.
  • Modes of communication are as follows:
    • Emails can be sent to – [email protected]
    • Letters can be mailed to PO Box 7347, Stockton Ca. 95267
    • A meeting with a pastor regarding the candidacy can be set up through calling the office @ (209) 981-8099

During this period of time, the elders will remain prayerfully dependent upon the direction of God and will strongly consider the feedback of the church.

On June 4th, the elder candidacy will conclude and the decision will be announced to the church.
